The Scorpion
Scorpions were a real danger in the wilderness of Sinai, which Moses remembered as a place 'wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions.' Their painful sting made them a picture of torment and hostility. Rehoboam threatened to chastise Israel 'with scorpions,' God told Ezekiel not to fear though he dwelt among scorpions, and in Revelation the locusts from the pit torment people like the sting of a scorpion. Jesus gave his disciples 'power to tread on serpents and scorpions,' and asked what father would give his child a scorpion when asked for an egg.
