The full messianic line from Adam to Jesus, drawn from Genesis 5 and 11, Ruth 4, 1 Chronicles 3, and Matthew 1 - one continuous line of descent spanning the entire Old Testament. 60 generations, one continuous line.

The Primeval Line

From Adam to Terah, the ten generations before Abraham - Genesis 5 and 11.

  1. Adam

    The first man, formed from the dust of the ground.

  2. Seth

    Born after Abel's death, "appointed" by God to continue the line.

  3. Enos

    In his days, men began to call upon the name of the Lord.

  4. Cainan

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  5. Mahalaleel

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  6. Jared

    Father of Enoch, who walked with God.

  7. Enoch

    Walked with God, and was not, for God took him.

  8. Methuselah

    The longest-lived man recorded in Scripture, 969 years.

  9. Lamech

    Named his son Noah, hoping for comfort from the cursed ground.

  10. Noah

    Found grace in the eyes of the Lord; preserved humanity through the flood.

  11. Shem

    Noah's son, ancestor of the Semitic peoples and of Abraham.

  12. Arphaxad

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  13. Salah

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  14. Eber

    Traditionally understood as the namesake of "Hebrew."

  15. Peleg

    Named because "in his days was the earth divided" (Genesis 10:25).

  16. Reu

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  17. Serug

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  18. Nahor

    Grandfather of Abraham.

  19. Terah

    Abraham's father, who set out from Ur but settled in Haran.

The Patriarchs

God's covenant promise to Abraham, carried through Isaac and Jacob to the tribe of Judah.

  1. Abraham

    Called by God to leave his home; father of many nations by promise.

  2. Isaac

    The child of promise, nearly offered on Mount Moriah.

  3. Jacob

    Renamed Israel; father of the twelve tribes.

  4. Judah

    The tribe through whom the messianic line and kingship would run.

From Judah to David

The line from Judah to David, preserved through Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth - three women whose stories bend the expected path of the genealogy.

  1. Perez

    Son of Judah and Tamar, born through an unexpected turn in the family's story.

  2. Hezron

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  3. Ram

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  4. Amminadab

    Known only from the genealogical record.

  5. Nahshon

    A leader of Judah in the wilderness generation.

  6. Salmon

    Married Rahab of Jericho, according to Matthew's genealogy.

  7. Boaz & Ruth

    A kinsman-redeemer in Bethlehem, who married Ruth the Moabitess.

  8. Obed

    Son of Boaz and Ruth; grandfather of David.

  9. Jesse

    A man of Bethlehem, father of eight sons - the youngest of whom was David.

  10. David

    Shepherd, king, and the namesake of the everlasting throne promised to his line.

The Kings of Judah

The royal line from David through the kings of Judah to the Babylonian exile.

  1. Solomon

    David's son, renowned for wisdom, who built the first Temple.

  2. Rehoboam

    Whose harsh rule split the kingdom into Israel and Judah.

  3. Abijah

    King of Judah, son of Rehoboam.

  4. Asa

    A reforming king who removed idols from Judah.

  5. Jehoshaphat

    Allied with Israel, known for his trust in God against overwhelming odds.

  6. Joram (Jehoram)

    Matthew's genealogy telescopes past three kings here (Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah).

  7. Uzziah (Azariah)

    A long and largely prosperous reign, ended by pride and leprosy.

  8. Jotham

    A king who did right, though the people remained corrupt.

  9. Ahaz

    An idolatrous king who allied with Assyria against God's counsel.

  10. Hezekiah

    A faithful king whose prayer extended his life and delivered Jerusalem from Assyria.

  11. Manasseh

    Judah's most idolatrous king, who later repented in captivity.

  12. Amon

    Reversed his father's late repentance; assassinated after two years.

  13. Josiah

    A reforming boy-king who rediscovered the Book of the Law.

  14. Jeconiah (Jehoiachin)

    Exiled to Babylon; Matthew again telescopes past his father Jehoiakim.

Exile and Return to Joseph

The line continues through the Babylonian exile, largely known only from Matthew's genealogy, to Joseph the husband of Mary.

  1. Shealtiel

    Son of Jeconiah, born in the Babylonian exile.

  2. Zerubbabel

    Led the first return from exile and oversaw rebuilding the Temple.

  3. Abiud

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  4. Eliakim

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  5. Azor

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  6. Zadok

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  7. Achim

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  8. Eliud

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  9. Eleazar

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  10. Matthan

    Known only from Matthew's genealogy.

  11. Jacob

    Father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

  12. Joseph & Mary

    The husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born.

  13. Jesus

    Called Christ - the culmination of the entire line, born of Mary.
