Portrait of Zachariah (King of Israel)

Zachariah (Zechariah) was the son of Jeroboam II and the last king of the dynasty of Jehu. He reigned only six months in Samaria and did evil as his fathers had done. Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him and killed him openly, 'before the people.' His death fulfilled the LORD's word to Jehu that his sons would sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation, and it opened a period of rapid assassinations that ended with Israel's fall to Assyria.
