Zechariah's Song (Benedictus)
His voice restored at John's birth, Zechariah burst into a Spirit-filled song blessing God for visiting and redeeming his people.
Struck mute for doubting the angel's promise of a son, the priest Zechariah had his speech restored at the birth and naming of John the Baptist, and immediately he was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied. His song, known as the Benedictus from its Latin opening, blesses God for visiting and redeeming his people, for raising up a horn of salvation in the house of David, and for the child John who would go before the Lord to prepare his way. It is one of the great Spirit-inspired songs that open Luke's Gospel, celebrating the dawn of salvation.
