Creation

Creation

In the opening chapters of Genesis, God creates the heavens and the earth and all that is in them over six days, culminating in the formation of humanity in His image on the sixth day before resting on the seventh. This sovereign act establishes God's authority over all creation and underscores His ongoing role in sustaining the universe through His power and providence. The theme of creation is significant in Scripture as it forms the foundation for understanding human purpose, the sanctity of life, and the need for redemption after the fall, appearing in passages like Psalm 19, Isaiah 40, and John 1. It matters because it affirms that the world is not accidental but purposefully designed by a personal God who maintains a relationship with His creation.

Image of God

Humans are created as God's co-rulers of creation, but rebellion forfeits that role. Jesus opens a new way of being human.

Key Chapters

Key Passages

In the beginning God created

Genesis 1:1-5

The Bible's opening words establish God as the uncaused cause of everything - sovereign, eternal, and purposeful, creating by the power of His word alone.

I1n the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

The heavens declare the glory of God

Psalms 19:1-6

David observes that creation itself is a wordless sermon - the natural world continuously proclaims God's existence, power, and artistry to all who have eyes to see.

T1he heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, 5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. 6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

All things were made by Him

John 1:1-5

John identifies Jesus as the agent of creation - the Word through whom everything came into being, establishing Christ's deity and authority over all that exists.

I1n the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

By Him all things consist

Colossians 1:15-17

Paul declares that Christ not only created all things but sustains them moment by moment - the universe holds together by His continuous will.

W15ho is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

God saw everything He made and it was very good

Genesis 1:26-31

God's assessment of creation as 'very good' affirms the material world's inherent value - matter is not evil but a divine gift worthy of stewardship and enjoyment.

A26nd God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
