Faith

Faith

Faith in Scripture centers on actively trusting God's promises and unchanging character despite fear, delay, or visible obstacles. This trust is vividly illustrated through Abraham, who obeyed God's call to leave his homeland and later prepared to sacrifice Isaac, believing God could raise the dead if needed. Such faith matters because it is credited as righteousness, forms the basis for a right relationship with God, and is repeatedly presented as the means by which believers receive salvation and persevere. Throughout both Testaments, from the exodus generation to the New Testament church, this theme underscores that genuine reliance on God shapes history and fulfills his redemptive purposes.

Key Passages

The substance of things hoped for

Hebrews 11:1-6

Hebrews defines faith not as blind belief but as confident assurance - the conviction that unseen realities are more solid than visible circumstances.

N1ow faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Faith as a mustard seed

Matthew 17:20

Jesus teaches that faith's power lies not in its quantity but in its object. Even tiny faith in an infinite God can accomplish the impossible.

A20nd Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Justified by faith

Romans 5:1-5

Paul declares that peace with God comes through faith, not performance - the doctrine that ignited the Reformation and remains the heart of Protestant theology.

T1herefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Faith without works is dead

James 2:14-26

James clarifies that genuine faith inevitably produces action. This is not a contradiction of Paul but a complement - real trust in God transforms behavior.

W14hat doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Abraham's faith credited as righteousness

Genesis 15:1-6

God counts Abraham's trust as righteousness before the law existed - establishing that right standing with God has always been by faith, not works.

A1fter these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2 And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Did You Know?

1

Faith is not wishful thinking. It is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. Biblical faith is rooted in the character of God and the promises He has made.

2

Faith is not the absence of doubt. It is the presence of trust that holds on even when the evidence is hidden. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 all died without receiving the promises, yet they lived as if the promises were sure.

3

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. The object of faith matters more than the strength of faith. Small faith in a great Savior is enough to save.
