Salvation

Salvation addresses humanity's separation from God due to sin, which originated with Adam and Eve and brought both spiritual death and physical mortality upon all people. God responded by sending Jesus Christ to live a sinless life, die on the cross as a substitute for sinners, and rise from the dead, thereby satisfying divine justice and offering forgiveness. This act forms the central narrative of Scripture, from the promises in Genesis through the prophecies of Isaiah to the fulfillment recorded in the Gospels and explained in the epistles. Its significance rests in restoring relationship with God and granting eternal life to those who receive it by grace through faith rather than personal effort.

Saved by grace through faith

Ephesians 2:8-10

Paul states the gospel's core mechanism: salvation is God's gift received through faith, not earned by works - eliminating all human boasting and establishing pure grace.

F8or by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The Romans Road to salvation

Romans 10:9-13

Paul outlines the simplest path to salvation: confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him - making salvation accessible to anyone who calls on His name.

T9hat if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Jesus the way, truth, and life

John 14:6-7

Jesus' exclusive claim - 'no one comes to the Father except through me' - establishes Him as the sole mediator between God and humanity.

J6esus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Whoever calls on the name of the Lord

Acts 2:37-41

Peter's Pentecost sermon offers salvation to all who call on Jesus' name - extending the promise beyond ethnic Israel to everyone who responds in faith.

N37ow when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

God's gift of eternal life

Romans 6:23

Paul contrasts sin's wages (death) with God's gift (eternal life) - the starkest summary of humanity's problem and God's solution in all of Scripture.

F23or the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
