Wonderful, Counsellor, Prince of Peace

Illustration of Wonderful, Counsellor, Prince of Peace

Some seven centuries before Bethlehem, Isaiah announced a child to be born and a son to be given, upon whose shoulder the government would rest: 'his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.' Each name points beyond an ordinary king - one whose wisdom is beyond human counsel, who bears the title of God himself, and whose reign of peace will have no end 'upon the throne of David.' The KJV punctuation separates 'Wonderful' and 'Counsellor,' while many translations join them as 'Wonderful Counselor'; either way the names describe the coming Messiah.
