How many books are in the Bible?

The Protestant Bible, including the King James Version, contains 66 books: 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Catholic and Orthodox Bibles include additional deuterocanonical books, bringing their totals higher.

The King James Bible, like other Protestant translations, contains 66 books total: 39 books in the Old Testament (from Genesis through Malachi, organized into the Law, History, Wisdom/Poetry, and the Major and Minor Prophets) and 27 books in the New Testament (the four Gospels, Acts, Paul's letters, the General Epistles, and Revelation). Roman Catholic Bibles include an additional set of books and additions known as the deuterocanonical books (or "Apocrypha" to Protestants) - such as Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, and 1-2 Maccabees - bringing their Old Testament total to 46 books and their overall total to 73. Eastern Orthodox Bibles include still further books depending on the tradition. The 66-book Protestant canon was affirmed at the Reformation, following the Jewish canon for the Old Testament (which does not include the Apocrypha) and the New Testament canon that had been broadly settled by the fourth century.
