Although part of the Songs of Ascents, Psalm 121 uniquely omits any reference to Zion or the temple, emphasizing God's personal guardianship over the pilgrim rather than the destination.
The Hebrew verb shamar (keep) appears six times, underscoring the theme of divine protection more intensely than in any other single psalm.
Verse 1's reference to hills likely evokes both the physical ascent to Jerusalem and the temptation to look to pagan high places for help, redirecting the gaze to Yahweh alone.
The promise against sun and moon striking draws on ancient Near Eastern beliefs about celestial deities, asserting Yahweh's sovereignty over all cosmic forces.
Its placement after Psalm 120 (lament over deceitful surroundings) and before 122 (arrival in Jerusalem) forms a narrative arc of journey from distress to worship under God's keeping.
