Jehoiachin

Portrait of Jehoiachin

Jehoiachin was a young king of Judah who reigned only three months before surrendering to Nebuchadnezzar, who carried him, the royal household, and the treasures of Jerusalem to Babylon in the first great deportation. He spent decades as a captive, but the Bible's history ends on a note of grace: after thirty-seven years the Babylonian king Evil-merodach released him from prison and gave him a place of honor at his table.

Did You Know?

1

Jehoiachin reigned only three months before surrendering to Nebuchadnezzar in 597 BC, and Babylonian ration tablets excavated at Babylon actually list 'Yaukin, king of the land of Judah' receiving oil and grain - striking confirmation of his exile.

2

After thirty-seven years in prison, he was released and given a seat above other kings at the Babylonian table (2 Kings 25:27-30), the hopeful final note on which the books of Kings end.

3

Though Jeremiah declared him 'childless' as far as the throne was concerned (Jeremiah 22:30), his grandson Zerubbabel led the return from exile, and he appears in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus.

A10t that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.

11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants did besiege it. 12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers: and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign. 13 And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the kingโ€™s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD, as the LORD had said. 14 And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths: none remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land. 15 And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the kingโ€™s mother, and the kingโ€™s wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land, those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. 16 And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all that were strong and apt for war, even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.

Jehoiachin Shown Favor

2 Kings 25:27-30

After long imprisonment, Evil-merodach lifts up Jehoiachin's head and grants him a daily portion - a glimmer of hope for David's line.

A27nd it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison;

28 And he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon; 29 And changed his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him all the days of his life. 30 And his allowance was a continual allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life.
