Lamech

Portrait of Lamech

Lamech was the son of Methuselah and the father of Noah, the last generation born before the Flood in the line of Genesis 5. He named his son Noah, saying, "This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed" (Genesis 5:29), and died five years before the Flood came.

This Lamech (father of Noah) is distinct from the earlier Lamech of Genesis 4, a descendant of Cain who boasted of killing a man and took two wives.

Lamech died at 777 years old, five years before the Flood - he did not live to see the judgment his father Methuselah's death year is traditionally linked to.

Lamech's naming of Noah is the first recorded instance in Genesis of a name given with an explicit statement of hope.

A25nd Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech:

26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died. 28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed. 30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.
