The Woman with the Issue of Blood

Portrait of The Woman with the Issue of Blood

For twelve years this unnamed woman suffered continual bleeding, spending all she had on physicians who could not help her, a condition that under the Law also left her ceremonially unclean and socially isolated. Hearing of Jesus, she pressed through the crowd, believing that if she could only touch the hem of his garment she would be healed - and the moment she did, her bleeding stopped instantly. Jesus, perceiving that power had gone out from him, stopped to find her rather than let her slip away anonymously; trembling, she came forward and told him the whole truth. He called her "daughter," told her that her faith had made her well, and sent her away in peace - restoring not only her health but her dignity and place in the community, in the middle of an urgent journey to heal Jairus's dying daughter.

Jesus Calls Her Daughter

Mark 5:30-34

Jesus refuses to let her healing remain anonymous, publicly honoring her faith and restoring her fully to community life.

A30nd Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
