Amos' Plumb Line

Illustration of Amos' Plumb Line
Amos saw the LORD standing beside a wall with a plumb line in His hand. Israel had been measured against God's straight standard, and the wall was crooked.

Amos was shown the LORD standing on a wall built true by a plumbline, with a plumbline in His hand. When God asked, 'Amos, what seest thou?' the prophet answered, 'A plumbline.' Then the LORD declared that He would set a plumbline in the midst of His people Israel and would not pass by them any more. Just as a builder checks a wall against the line and tears down what is crooked, God had measured Israel against His standard and found it out of true. The high places of Isaac would be made desolate, the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste, and the house of Jeroboam would face the sword.
