The Almond Tree
The almond is one of the first trees in Israel to blossom, flowering white while winter is barely over. When Israel questioned Aaron's priesthood, God had a rod for each tribe laid up overnight, and Aaron's rod 'brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds,' living proof of God's choice. The golden lampstand was made with cups 'made like unto almonds.' God opened Jeremiah's ministry with a vision of 'a rod of an almond tree,' a Hebrew wordplay between almond (shaqed) and watching (shoqed): God was watching over his word to perform it.
