Paul's Prayer for the Philippians

Illustration of Paul's Prayer for the Philippians
From prison, Paul prayed with joy that the Philippians' love would abound more and more in knowledge and discernment, and that their lives would be full of the fruits of righteousness.

Writing to the church at Philippi with Timothy, Paul thanks God upon every remembrance of them and prays for them with joy because of their fellowship in the gospel from the first day. He is confident that the One who began a good work in them will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Then he tells them exactly what he prays: that their love may abound more and more in knowledge and in all judgment, so that they may approve things that are excellent, be sincere and without offence until the day of Christ, and be filled with the fruits of righteousness which come through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. It is a prayer for love that grows wiser, not only warmer.

Thanksgiving with Joy

Philippians 1:3-8

Even in his bonds Paul prays with joy, confident that God will finish the good work He began in them.

I3 thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, 5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; 6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: 7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. 8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

That Your Love May Abound

Philippians 1:9-11

Paul asks that their love would overflow with knowledge and discernment, producing a life full of the fruits of righteousness.

A9nd this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; 11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
