Drowning in debt and money problems - I lost my job and cannot pay my bills

Financial fear is body-level fear - Jesus knew that, which is why his longest recorded teaching on anxiety is specifically about provision: 'Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat... Behold the fowls of the air... your heavenly Father feedeth them.

' (Matthew 6:25-26), ending with the promise that when you seek his kingdom first, 'all these things shall be added unto you' (Matthew 6:33). That is not a promise of wealth; it is a promise of a Father: 'my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory' (Philippians 4:19), and David's lifetime testimony was 'I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread' (Psalm 37:25). Practically, Scripture pairs trust with action: pray specifically ('Give us this day our daily bread', Matthew 6:11); tell your church - letting the body carry burdens is commanded, not shameful (Galatians 6:2; Acts 4:34-35); take honest work while seeking better (Ephesians 4:28); face the numbers squarely and pay what you owe as you are able ('the wicked borroweth, and payeth not again', Psalm 37:21) - a nonprofit credit counselor can help you build that plan; and refuse both despair and get-rich-quick escapes (Proverbs 28:20 - see the gambling answer).

This season is survivable, you are not a failure to God, and shame has no vote here: 'Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee' (Psalm 55:22).
