Gambling, casinos, and playing the lottery
The Bible never uses the word gambling, so this is a matter of applying its principles - and the principles converge quickly. Scripture warns bluntly about the hunger to get rich fast: 'He that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent' (Proverbs 28:20), 'wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished' (Proverbs 13:11), and 'they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare... For the love of money is the root of all evil' (1 Timothy 6:9-10).
Gambling's whole engine is that hope - and its house always wins at someone else's expense, which sits poorly beside loving your neighbor (Matthew 22:39) and working honestly for bread (Ephesians 4:28). An occasional lottery ticket may be more foolish than damning; but be honest about trajectory, because gambling is engineered to enslave, and the believer's line is firm: 'I will not be brought under the power of any' (1 Corinthians 6:12). If it has become a compulsion - chasing losses, hiding it, bills unpaid - treat it as the addiction it is: confess it into the light (James 5:16), block the access, and get real help (the National Problem Gambling Helpline is 1-800-522-4700).
Contentment is the wealth gambling promises and never pays: 'godliness with contentment is great gain' (1 Timothy 6:6).
