Jesus in the Nazareth Synagogue
Returning to Nazareth where he had been brought up, Jesus went to the synagogue on the sabbath, as was his custom, and read from the book of Isaiah: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor.' Closing the book, he declared, 'This day is this scripture fulfillled in your ears.' The townspeople first marvelled at his gracious words, but when he reminded them that Elijah was sent to a widow of Sidon and Elisha cleansed only Naaman the Syrian, they were filled with wrath and tried to throw him from the brow of the hill. He passed through the midst of them and went his way.
