Covenant

Covenant

Throughout Scripture, God relates to His people through covenants โ€” solemn, binding agreements that establish the terms of relationship between the Creator and His creation. Beginning with the covenant with Noah after the flood, God progressively revealed His redemptive plan through the Abrahamic covenant promising land, descendants, and blessing to all nations; the Mosaic covenant establishing Israel as a holy nation under divine law at Sinai; the Davidic covenant guaranteeing an eternal throne; and ultimately the New Covenant prophesied by Jeremiah and inaugurated by Jesus Christ through His blood. Each covenant builds upon the previous ones, revealing more of God's character and His unwavering commitment to restore fallen humanity. The concept of covenant is the theological backbone of the Bible, explaining why the Scriptures are divided into Old and New Testaments (covenants) and providing the framework for understanding God's faithfulness across generations despite human failure.

Key Passages

The Noahic Covenant - never again a flood

Genesis 9:8-17

God's first explicit covenant is universal and unconditional - a promise to all living creatures sealed with the rainbow, revealing a God who binds Himself to preserve His creation.

A8nd God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,

9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; 10 And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. 17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

The Abrahamic Covenant - blessing to all nations

Genesis 15:1-21

God alone passes between the cut animals, taking the full obligation upon Himself - an unconditional promise of land, offspring, and universal blessing that anchors all subsequent redemptive history.

A1fter these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2 And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. 7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 8 And he said, LORD God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not. 11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away. 12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. 13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. 17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. 18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

The Mosaic Covenant - a holy nation

Exodus 19:3-8

At Sinai, God offers Israel a conditional covenant: obedience brings the privilege of being His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests mediating His presence to the world.

A3nd Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;

4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eaglesโ€™ wings, and brought you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

The Davidic Covenant - an eternal throne

2 Samuel 7:12-16

God promises David an everlasting dynasty - a covenant fulfilled ultimately in Jesus Christ, the Son of David whose kingdom will never end.

A12nd when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

The New Covenant - written on hearts

Jeremiah 31:31-34

Jeremiah prophesies a covenant that surpasses Sinai - God's law internalized, sins fully forgiven, and intimate knowledge of God available to all, from least to greatest.

B31ehold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

The New Covenant in Christ's blood

Luke 22:19-20

At the Last Supper, Jesus declares the cup to be the new covenant in His blood - inaugurating Jeremiah's promise through His sacrificial death and making every communion a covenant renewal.

A19nd he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Did You Know?

1

The covenant is the backbone of the biblical story. God binds Himself to His people with promises that cannot be broken. The story of Scripture is the story of a God who keeps His word even when we do not keep ours.

2

Covenants in the Bible are not negotiated. They are declared by God and received by faith. The terms are set by the greater party. The response is trust and obedience.

3

The new covenant is the fulfillment of every covenant that came before. In Christ, all the promises of God find their yes. The covenant is no longer external. It is written on hearts.
