The Ark Captured by the Philistines
Hoping the Ark of the Covenant would guarantee victory like a good luck charm, Israel carried it into battle against the Philistines at Ebenezer - only to suffer a crushing defeat in which the ark itself was captured and Eli's two wicked sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were killed. When news reached the aged high priest Eli, he fell backward from his seat and died of a broken neck, and his daughter-in-law, going into labor from the shock, named her newborn son Ichabod - 'the glory is departed from Israel' - because the ark of God was taken. The episode became the low point of the judges era, showing that God's presence cannot be manipulated as a talisman, however sacred the object, when the hearts of his people are far from him.
