The Son of David

Illustration of The Son of David

God promised David that he would set up his seed after him and 'stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.' From then on Israel looked for a coming king from David's line. Matthew opens his Gospel by calling Jesus 'the son of David, the son of Abraham,' and the title became the cry of those who recognized him: blind men by the road called, 'Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David,' and the crowds at the triumphal entry shouted, 'Hosanna to the son of David.' Jesus himself pointed out that David called the Messiah 'Lord,' showing that David's son is far greater than David.
