What Does Matthew 5:44 Mean?
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
What It Means
This verse is Jesus calling us to respond to people who hurt, oppose, or mistreat us with active love instead of hate or payback. It means choosing to speak kindly about them, do good to them, and pray for them-even when they donโt deserve it.
In everyday life, this breaks the cycle of anger and grudges that wears us down, helps us stay free and peaceful inside, and shows others the same patient love God gives us. Itโs not about pretending the hurt didnโt happen, but about refusing to let it control how we treat people.
