Cainan was the son of Enos and great-grandson of Adam, fourth in the line recorded in Genesis 5. Scripture preserves no deeds or words of his beyond his place in the genealogy: he lived 910 years, fathered Mahalaleel, and had other sons and daughters.

At 910 years, Cainan lived longer than all but Jared, Methuselah, and Noah among the pre-Flood patriarchs of Genesis 5.

He is not to be confused with the later Cainan named in Luke's genealogy (Luke 3:36) between Arphaxad and Salah, who does not appear in the Hebrew text of Genesis 11.

A9nd Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:

10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died. 12 And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel: 13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.
