Portrait of Pharaoh Neco

Pharaoh Neco (Necho) was the king of Egypt who marched north to the Euphrates around 609 BC, during the final struggle between Assyria and Babylon. When King Josiah of Judah went out to stop him at Megiddo, Neco warned him through messengers that God had commanded him to make haste and that Josiah should not meddle; Josiah persisted and was killed. Three months later Neco deposed Josiah's son Jehoahaz, took him to Egypt, put Judah under tribute, and made Eliakim king in his place, renaming him Jehoiakim. Egypt's hold on the region ended in 605 BC, when Nebuchadnezzar defeated Neco's army at Carchemish.

Did You Know?

1

The King James Version says Neco went up 'against the king of Assyria' (2 Kings 23:29), but the Babylonian Chronicle shows that Egypt was marching to support the last Assyrian forces against Babylon; the Hebrew preposition can also mean 'to.'

2

The Chronicler presents Neco's warning to Josiah as coming 'from the mouth of God' (2 Chronicles 35:22), so Josiah's death followed his refusal to heed a divine word spoken through a foreign king.

3

He is identified with Necho II of Egypt's Twenty-sixth Dynasty; the Greek historian Herodotus says he began digging a canal from the Nile toward the Red Sea.

Necho's Warning

2 Chronicles 35:20-24

The Chronicler presents Neco's words as coming 'from the mouth of God,' so Josiah's death follows his refusal to listen.

A20fter all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Charchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.

21 But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not. 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded. 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.

Neco Makes Jehoiakim King

2 Kings 23:33-35

Judah's throne is now in a foreign king's gift, and the people pay heavily for Egypt's favor.

A33nd Pharaohnechoh put him in bands at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and put the land to a tribute of an hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.

34 And Pharaohnechoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father, and turned his name to Jehoiakim, and took Jehoahaz away: and he came to Egypt, and died there. 35 And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh: he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, of every one according to his taxation, to give it unto Pharaohnechoh.
