The Saviour of the World

Illustration of The Saviour of the World

This title was first spoken not by apostles but by Samaritans. After a woman at Jacob's well told her town about the man who 'told me all that ever I did,' many came to Jesus and asked him to stay. After two days they said, 'Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.' That people long kept at a distance by the Jews should be first to call him this shows the reach of his mission. John later echoed it: 'the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.'
