Who was the oldest man in the Bible?
Methuselah is the oldest man recorded in the Bible. Genesis 5:27 says, "all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died." He was the son of Enoch and the grandfather of Noah.
Methuselah holds the record for the longest life in Scripture at 969 years (Genesis 5:27). He belonged to the family line of Seth recorded in Genesis 5, a genealogy filled with remarkable lifespans: Adam lived 930 years (Genesis 5:5), Methuselah's grandfather Jared lived 962 (Genesis 5:20), and Noah lived 950 (Genesis 9:29). Methuselah's father was Enoch, the man who "walked with God: and he was not; for God took him" (Genesis 5:24), and his son was Lamech, the father of Noah. A striking detail emerges when you add up the numbers in Genesis. Methuselah was 187 when Lamech was born (Genesis 5:25), Lamech was 182 when Noah was born (Genesis 5:28), and Noah was 600 when the flood came (Genesis 7:6). That totals 969 years, meaning Methuselah died in the very year the flood began. Many readers see in his long life a picture of God's patience, holding back judgment for as long as possible. After the flood, lifespans drop steadily, and by Moses' time 120 years was a long and full life (Deuteronomy 34:7). Christians differ on how to understand these ancient ages. Many take them literally, while others suggest the numbers carry symbolic or honorific meaning, but the text presents them plainly as part of the family line from Adam to Noah.
