John's Baptism vs. Baptism of the Holy Spirit

John's baptism was a baptism of repentance with water, preparing people's hearts for the Messiah's arrival; the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which John himself said Jesus would bring, is God's Spirit coming to indwell and empower believers - first fulfilled dramatically at Pentecost.

Scripture References

He Shall Baptize You With the Holy Ghost

Matthew 3:11
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

John explicitly distinguishes his own water baptism from the greater baptism Jesus would bring.

The Spirit Poured Out at Pentecost

Acts 2:1-4
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The dramatic first fulfillment of the baptism of the Holy Spirit that John promised.
