The Church vs. The Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God is God's sovereign reign over all creation - present now and consummated at Christ's return; the Church is the specific community of believers who have submitted to that reign, one visible expression of the Kingdom but not identical to it.

Point by Point

The Church The Kingdom of God
Scope A specific community - the assembly of believers gathered in Christ's name. God's reign over all things, broader than any single institution.
Timing Began at Pentecost and continues until Christ's return. Present now ('the kingdom of God is within/among you,' Luke 17:21) and fully realized at Christ's return.
Relationship The Church proclaims and demonstrates the Kingdom, but the Kingdom is larger than the Church. Jesus's core message was 'the kingdom of God is at hand' (Mark 1:15) - the Church is one result of that proclamation.
