The Rapture vs. The Second Coming

"Rapture" (from the Latin for 'caught up') describes believers being gathered to meet Christ in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17); the "Second Coming" is Christ's visible, physical return to earth in glory and judgment (Revelation 19). Christians hold differing views on exactly how these two events relate in sequence.

Point by Point

The Rapture The Second Coming
Direction of movement Believers are 'caught up' to meet Christ. Christ comes down visibly to the earth.
Visibility Described in terms of believers being gathered, without the same public, cosmic imagery. Described with dramatic public imagery - every eye shall see him (Revelation 1:7).
Where the term comes from The word 'rapture' itself doesn't appear in most English Bibles; it derives from the Latin rapiemur ('we shall be caught up') in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. 'Coming' translates the Greek parousia, used throughout the New Testament for Christ's return.
