Church & Community

The Bible portrays the church as a community of believers united in Christ, called to fellowship, worship, and mutual edification. From the Old Testament community of Israel to the New Testament church, God's people are meant to live in unity and love. This community serves as a witness to the world and supports one another in faith and good works.

Key Passages

Israel as a holy community

Exodus 19:5-6

God establishes Israel as a covenant community set apart for His purposes. This foreshadows the church as a people belonging to God.

N5ow therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

The blessing of unity

Psalms 133:1

The psalm celebrates the goodness of brethren dwelling together in unity. It highlights God's design for harmonious community among His people.

B1ehold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Christ's presence in gathered believers

Matthew 18:20

Jesus promises His presence where two or three gather in His name. This underscores the spiritual reality of Christian community.

F20or where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Early church fellowship

Acts 2:42-47

The first believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Their communal life demonstrates the practical outworking of church community.

A42nd they continued stedfastly in the apostlesโ€™ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

The body of Christ

1 Corinthians 12:12-14

Paul describes the church as one body with many members. Each part is essential, illustrating interdependence within the Christian community.

F12or as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many.
