Infidelity & Affair

Infidelity & Affair

Whether you have been betrayed by unfaithfulness or are the one who broke trust, an affair leaves a marriage in pieces that don't fit back together the same way. Scripture holds both truths without flinching: the seriousness of the betrayal, and the real possibility of confession, forgiveness, and even restoration - though never a demand that it happen on anyone's timeline but the wounded person's own.

David's Confession

Psalms 51:1-4

David's psalm after his affair with Bathsheba is the Bible's clearest model of honest confession rather than excuse-making after unfaithfulness.

H1ave mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

Destroyeth His Own Soul

Proverbs 6:32

Proverbs names adultery's cost plainly - a sober warning that takes the wound seriously rather than minimizing it.

B32ut whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

If We Confess Our Sins

1 John 1:9

God's faithfulness to forgive confessed sin is the foundation for any hope of rebuilding trust after betrayal.

I9f we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

As We Forgive

Matthew 6:14-15

Jesus ties receiving forgiveness to extending it - a hard word for anyone deciding whether reconciliation is possible.

F14or if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Hosea and Gomer

Hosea 3:1

God commands the prophet Hosea to love his unfaithful wife again, as a living picture of God's own persistent love toward an unfaithful people.

T1hen said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.
