I am thinking about divorce - does God hate divorce

Scripture treats marriage as a covenant God takes seriously, and Malachi 2:16 says the LORD 'hateth putting away' - because divorce always involves real loss and pain that God does not shrug at. But the Bible also recognizes that sin can break a marriage: Jesus permitted divorce where there has been sexual unfaithfulness (Matthew 19:9), and Paul recognized abandonment by an unbelieving spouse as releasing the believer - 'a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases' (1 Corinthians 7:15).

And nothing in Scripture requires anyone to remain under abuse - see the separate answer on abusive marriages. If your marriage is merely hard, God's grace and often a good counselor can revive what seems dead - many couples come through seasons that felt final.

If it has been broken by unfaithfulness, abandonment, or abuse, you may grieve without condemnation. Either way, seek wise counsel before deciding (Proverbs 15:22), and know that divorced people are not second-class in God's eyes - his grace is not rationed by marital history.
