Daily and Weekly Offerings

Law/Torah 5 min 31 verses Moses

Daily and Weekly Offerings

The daily Tamid lambs frame the entire chapter's calendar, establishing that all subsequent monthly and festival offerings are additions to this perpetual twice-daily rhythm rather than replacements, underscoring unbroken covenant maintenance.

A1๐Ÿ”—nd the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2๐Ÿ”— Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, My offering, and my bread for my sacrifices made by fire, for a sweet savour unto me, shall ye observe to offer unto me in their due season.

3๐Ÿ”— And thou shalt say unto them, This is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto the LORD; two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering.

4๐Ÿ”— The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at even;

5๐Ÿ”— And a tenth part of an ephah of flour for a meat offering, mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil.

6๐Ÿ”— It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD.

7๐Ÿ”— And the drink offering thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be poured unto the LORD for a drink offering.

8๐Ÿ”— And the other lamb shalt thou offer at even: as the meat offering of the morning, and as the drink offering thereof, thou shalt offer it, a sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

9๐Ÿ”— And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof:

10๐Ÿ”— This is the burnt offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.

11๐Ÿ”— And in the beginnings of your months ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the LORD; two young bullocks, and one ram, seven lambs of the first year without spot;

12๐Ÿ”— And three tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, for one bullock; and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, for one ram;

13๐Ÿ”— And a several tenth deal of flour mingled with oil for a meat offering unto one lamb; for a burnt offering of a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD.

14๐Ÿ”— And their drink offerings shall be half an hin of wine unto a bullock, and the third part of an hin unto a ram, and a fourth part of an hin unto a lamb: this is the burnt offering of every month throughout the months of the year.

15๐Ÿ”— And one kid of the goats for a sin offering unto the LORD shall be offered, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.

16๐Ÿ”— And in the fourteenth day of the first month is the passover of the LORD.

17๐Ÿ”— And in the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten.

18๐Ÿ”— In the first day shall be an holy convocation; ye shall do no manner of servile work therein:

19๐Ÿ”— But ye shall offer a sacrifice made by fire for a burnt offering unto the LORD; two young bullocks, and one ram, and seven lambs of the first year: they shall be unto you without blemish:

20๐Ÿ”— And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil: three tenth deals shall ye offer for a bullock, and two tenth deals for a ram;

21๐Ÿ”— A several tenth deal shalt thou offer for every lamb, throughout the seven lambs:

22๐Ÿ”— And one goat for a sin offering, to make an atonement for you.

23๐Ÿ”— Ye shall offer these beside the burnt offering in the morning, which is for a continual burnt offering.

24๐Ÿ”— After this manner ye shall offer daily, throughout the seven days, the meat of the sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD: it shall be offered beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.

25๐Ÿ”— And on the seventh day ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work.

26๐Ÿ”— Also in the day of the firstfruits, when ye bring a new meat offering unto the LORD, after your weeks be out, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work:

27๐Ÿ”— But ye shall offer the burnt offering for a sweet savour unto the LORD; two young bullocks, one ram, seven lambs of the first year;

28๐Ÿ”— And their meat offering of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals unto one bullock, two tenth deals unto one ram,

29๐Ÿ”— A several tenth deal unto one lamb, throughout the seven lambs;

30๐Ÿ”— And one kid of the goats, to make an atonement for you.

31๐Ÿ”— Ye shall offer them beside the continual burnt offering, and his meat offering, (they shall be unto you without blemish) and their drink offerings.

Classic verse-by-verse commentary on Numbers 28 from Jamieson, Fausset & Brown (1871). Covers: Offerings to be observed.

2
Command the children of Israel, and say unto them โ€” The repetition of several laws formerly enacted, which is made in this chapter, was seasonable and necessary, not only on account of their importance and the frequent neglect of them, but because a new generation had sprung up since their first institution and because the Israelites were about to be settled in the land where those ordinances were to be observed. My offering, and my bread โ€” used generally for the appointed offerings, and the import of the prescription is to enforce regularity and care in their observance.
9,10
This is the burnt offering of every sabbath โ€” There is no previous mention of a Sabbath burnt offering, which was additional to the daily sacrifices.

Did You Know?

1

The daily Tamid lambs frame the entire chapter's calendar, establishing that all subsequent monthly and festival offerings are additions to this perpetual twice-daily rhythm rather than replacements, underscoring unbroken covenant maintenance.

2

Numbers 28 mandates a male goat sin offering alongside the celebratory new-moon burnt offerings, revealing that even joyous lunar renewals require atonement, a detail that later influenced Second Temple awareness of inherent human impurity at sacred times.

3

The drink offerings of wine are measured precisely to match each animal's size (a tenth, third, or half hin), creating a graduated libation system that echoes ancient Near Eastern treaty ratification practices where shared drink sealed communal bonds with the deity.

4

Sabbath sacrifices double the daily lambs without replacing them, theologically positioning rest not as cessation from offering but as intensified devotion, a pattern that rabbinic literature later connected to the idea of the Sabbath itself becoming an offering.

5

The chapter's exclusive focus on public, collective offerings omits any mention of individual vows or freewill gifts, highlighting a priestly ideal of worship as national obligation first, which contrasts with Deuteronomy's more decentralized emphasis on personal altars.

6
Moses

Moses' marriage to a Cushite woman sparked familial opposition from Miriam and Aaron, resulting in Miriam's temporary affliction with leprosy as divine punishment, underscoring tensions over ethnic intermarriage in the wilderness period.

7
Aaron

Following the deaths of his sons Nadab and Abihu for offering unauthorized fire, Aaron was instructed to remain silent and not mourn publicly, emphasizing the sacred boundaries separating priestly duties from personal grief.

8
Miriam

The entire Israelite camp halts its march for seven days at Hazeroth until Miriam is healed and readmitted, demonstrating her elevated communal status despite the punishment.

9
Caleb

Although the ten unfaithful spies died immediately in a plague, Caleb and Joshua survived the entire 40-year wilderness period because their minority report demonstrated wholehearted trust in God's promise.

10
Kadesh Barnea

From this site Moses sent twelve spies to explore the Promised Land, yet ten returned with a fearful report that sparked widespread rebellion and refusal to enter as God commanded.

11
Mount Nebo

Following this vision, Moses died on the mountain, and the Lord personally buried him in a secret location in the valley below, marking the conclusion of the Exodus generation's leadership.

12
Moab

This land became the setting for Ruth's faithful journey to Bethlehem, through which a Moabite woman entered the line leading to David and the promised Messiah.
