Is it a sin to listen to secular music or watch rated R movies

Scripture gives no approved-media list; it gives something more demanding - a trained conscience and a filter: 'whatsoever things are true... honest... just... pure... lovely... of good report...

think on these things' (Philippians 4:8), and 'whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God' (1 Corinthians 10:31). Secular does not mean sinful - all truth and beauty are God's wherever they surface, and Paul himself quoted pagan poets from memory (Acts 17:28). A love song, a well-told story, even art that honestly portrays evil AS evil (as Scripture itself does, unflinchingly) can be received with discernment. The real questions cut deeper than a rating: What is this feeding in me (Proverbs 4:23 - 'Keep thy heart with all diligence')? Is it presenting sin as delicious rather than portraying it as real (Isaiah 5:20)? Am I becoming numb to what should grieve me?

Would I be ashamed to watch it with Christ - because 'all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him' (Hebrews 4:13), I already am. And 'all things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient... I will not be brought under the power of any' (1 Corinthians 6:12). Believers' lines will differ here, and Romans 14 forbids both sneering at the strict and judging the free (Romans 14:3). Draw your line honestly before God, respect your own conscience (Romans 14:23), and be ruthless about anything that is quietly discipling you away from him.
